Many people feel the world is becoming more turbulent, and a new international report supports that feeling. The Institute for Economics and Peace just released its 2026 Global Peace Index, which measures the peacefulness of 163 countries each year. The results show that global peace has now declined for the twelfth year in a row.

Twelve Years of Decline: A Global Breakdown of Rising Conflict

The study uses 23 indicators to rate countries, including violent crime, political instability, and internal conflict. The data shows that 119 countries are less peaceful now than they were in 2008. There are also more active conflicts today than at any time since World War II, and the number of countries involved in wars outside their borders has nearly doubled over the past 20 years.

From Iceland to Russia: Mapping the World's Safest and Most Volatile Zones

Even as tensions rise, some countries remain very stable. Iceland is the world’s most peaceful country for the nineteenth year in a row. It ranks highest because it has no standing military, very low levels of violent crime, and strong social bonds among its people. New Zealand, Switzerland, Slovenia, and Ireland also rank at the top of the index.

At the bottom of the index, Russia is named the least peaceful country this year. Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ukraine, and Israel follow closely behind, showing the heavy impact of ongoing wars in these areas.

The Friction at Home: Dissecting the Steep Drop in U.S. Stability

For people in the United States, the report is a clear warning, though it may not surprise anyone following the news. The U.S. is now ranked 134th, which is six places lower than last year.

The report’s authors say this drop is mainly due to rising political instability and violent protests. They point out that 85% of Americans now think politically motivated violence is on the rise across the country. While these global numbers can seem overwhelming, they remind us how fragile social stability is and how important it is to build peace in our own communities.

WARNING: Do Not Travel To These 21 Countries This Year
