When summer arrives in the Wenatchee Valley, many of us enjoy relaxing on the patio. Unfortunately, that also means dealing with mosquitoes. Instead of grabbing a chemical spray right away, take a look around—your garden might already have a solution.

These Plants Work — But Only If You Know the Secret

Many common plants have natural compounds that mosquitoes really dislike. However, there’s a common mistake: simply placing these plants outside won’t keep bugs away. The essential oils that repel insects are inside the leaves. To make them work, you need to bruise, crush, or rub the leaves so the oils are released into the air or onto your skin. A pot of lavender looks nice on your deck, but if you crush a few leaves and rub them on your arm, you’ll have a natural bug repellent.

Five Plants That Mosquitoes Can't Stand

Citronella Geranium is a classic choice, often sold as the "Mosquito Plant." Its lacy, deeply cut leaves give off a strong citrus scent when you brush or crush them, and you can find it at most local nurseries.

Lavender helps by overwhelming a mosquito’s sense of smell, which is how they find their next meal. It also contains linalool, a natural compound that’s used in many commercial bug sprays.

Peppermint gives off a strong smell that mosquitoes avoid. One important tip: plant mint in a container, not straight in the ground. It spreads quickly and can take over a garden bed before you know it.

Lemongrass has real citronella oil and grows tall and full, so it’s great for big patio containers along a fence or the edge of your deck.

Marigolds are also a good choice because they have pyrethrum, a compound that’s so good at keeping insects away that it’s used in organic pest-control sprays.

The Simple Trick That Turns Garden Plants Into Bug Repellent

Here’s a tip for your next evening outside: put a few of these plants in containers near where you sit and gently rustle the leaves as you settle in. It’s your patio, your rules, and no mosquitoes allowed.
