Memorial Day weekend marks the start of backyard barbecues, patio drinks, and outdoor get-togethers across the Wenatchee Valley. But before you start grilling or head to a neighbor’s patio, a new national survey shows that hosts and guests often misunderstand each other, which sometimes leads people to quietly leave.
Data from the Caledonian Record shows that nearly half of party guests have left a backyard gathering early just because the outdoor space was uncomfortable. Most of them never told the host the real reason.

If you want your guests to stay at your next gathering, or to keep getting invited, it helps to know the unwritten rules of backyard etiquette.

The Host’s Biggest Gripe: Uninvited Guests

If you think it’s fine to bring an extra friend, you might want to reconsider. The survey found that over two-thirds of hosts agree on the top rule for backyard parties: don’t bring uninvited guests.
Hosting outdoors takes planning, from seating to making sure there’s enough food. Arriving with an unexpected guest can stress out your host. If you want to bring someone, always ask first.

Curbing the Discomfort Drop-Out

Why do so many guests leave early without saying anything? Outdoor comfort can be tricky, especially in North Central Washington, where a hot afternoon can quickly turn into a cool evening.
To keep your guests comfortable and hanging around, consider these simple fixes:
Make sure there’s enough shade. The late-afternoon sun can make a nice deck uncomfortably hot, so have umbrellas or shaded seats ready.
Keep bugs away. Nothing makes people leave faster than a swarm of mosquitoes, so have bug spray on hand.
Be ready for cooler evenings. If your party lasts into the night, have a fire pit ready or keep some clean blankets nearby so guests stay warm.
You don’t need fancy equipment to host a great outdoor party. A little preparation and attention to your guests’ comfort go a long way.
